You’ve done your homework and you’ve decided to pursue a career in the casino and gaming industry. You’ve spent time on building your resume and after applying you’ve now heard back from the recruiter and they want to phone screen you.
The phone screen is the very first interview and the first real impression you’ll be making on your recruiter. Whether you want to work at a Casino like VR, or any local casino, you’ll want to be sure you know exactly the right things to say. Here are 5 tips for your phone screen.
- Know Your Resume Like The back of Your Hand: When the recruiter asks you a question you don’t want to pause to look down to read your resume. Prepare and practice to know your resume extremely well. If you can answer their questions confidently and quick, you will leave a great first impression and you will come across as confident in your experience.
- Be Prepared to Explain Why You’re a Great Fit: Be able to explain how your experience is great for the position and the specific casino. A question or two on this level will come up at some point in your interview.
- Secure a Quiet Place for your Phone Screen: The best place for your phone screen will always be in a quiet room with doors closed. You don’t want friends or family disturbing you during. When possible, avoid all public locations for your scheduled phone screen and be sure to pick up the phone quickly. These little details will go far. Also, make sure to answer the phone before it goes to voicemail and avoid any awkward call back.
- Prepare 3-5 Questions to Ask at the End of Your Screen: The end of your phone screen is a chance for you to ask your recruiter some questions. Avoid questions about salary and benefits and hold those until the next step. Ask them questions about how you can become successful in the role. Ask questions about your team and your supervisor. Ask them about the previous person in this role and why they are no longer employed by the casino.
- Ask How They Would Like You To Follow Up: When the interview is over, ask how they would like you to follow up with them and how long to wait before reaching out. Recruiters will sometimes prefer email over calls, so grab their preference and give them plenty of time before asking for an update.
