While there is a lot that employers can do to increase employee satisfaction, if you are not in the right job, it’s going to be hard to be happy in that role. That’s why it’s so important to think long and hard before picking a career. Read on for some factors that you should consider before making a choice.

The Match Their Personality

This an interesting one as a lot of careers advice and psychometric testing is based on personality types. It easy to discount it though as ‘not quite right in my case’. But I think a lot of that has to do with the fact that we are so young when we have to start thinking about the career path that we would like to take. I’m not sure how many of us know who we are yet, let alone what we want to do with the rest of our lives.

It’s funny, but I think Meyers – Briggs type tests can help guide us in the right direction. These tests take into account how we get our energy, how we take in information, and how we process it. Proponents of this theory suggest that we should do something that matches our natural selves as much as possible. Then this will limit the extra emotion work we would have to do to fit in with a job role. A good example of this is if an introvert was working in a loud, noisy, sales office. They would probably find it draining rather that satisfying. So think carefully before you pick your role.

They Match Their Interests

Another thing that you have to consider carefully before you make a choice on your career is what interests you. Most people don’t have too much of an issue with this because what you are interested in you, tend to be better at. Perhaps because of the additional focus and effort we put it?

But it can be a problem for those people that are strong across the board. What if you work your butt off in science and math all year to get your A, but more than anything you want to be an artist? Well-meaning teachers and family members are more likely to push you towards the steady careers of medicine or accountancy. But this could be very unfulfilling for you. Remember that the thing that gets your blood pumping is the thing that you should be doing for the rest of your life!

They Match Their Skills

You also need to consider your skill level in a certain field before you choose to make it your career. Lots of careers need specialised training before you can get into them. These include all levels or jobs like from lawyers to dental nurses, as you can see from these examples in the Staff Nurse website. Are you prepared to do the extra study and complete it? Is it realistic for you right now to take on the work? What about the costs and the time it will take?

Also, there are the thing that we can love doing that are fun, that we don’t necessarily have to make a career out of. Most people like to dance, but few become prima ballerinas. You need to assess whether you have or can get to the skill level required to be a success before you pick a career.
