While there are plenty of good internship roles around that can provide handy experience to add to a resume, sometimes you just want to earn as much cash over the summer as possible (especially if you’re saving up for a trip or a car). That’s where a well-paid summer role comes in handy. Not only can you earn some dollars for your trouble, but you’ll also gain experience and learn some new skills at the same time.

If you’re keen to find a top paying position to spend your time on over the warmer months, use your own connections or family and friend contacts to find a gig, or search online to source openings (sites like Monster and Gumtree advertise jobs every day). Read on for the lowdown on some of the better-paying roles to keep an eye out for.

Babysitter

If you like hanging out with young kids, then a babysitting role might be perfect for you. Although many people believe that babysitters don’t earn much, in fact it is often possible to land very well-paying positions. Babysitters usually charge around $10 per hour to watch one or two children, and $12 and upwards to keep an eye on three.

They can also charge extras for making meals, cleaning the house or coordinating play times with other children. In addition, they will tend to make significantly extra on tips from happy customers, or from clients who end up running late or need a sitter to work late hours.

Golf Caddie

If you love sport, then see if you can land a role as a golf caddie over the summer months. If you do, you’ll not only be joining the ranks of a number of famous faces who once spent time as caddies (including Bill Clinton), but you’ll also be able to earn a top wage. Believe it or not, good caddies can earn up to $100 per bag for less than five hours of work, which can add up nicely over a few months.

Postal Roles

Postal Service is another good option for short-term jobs. The organization offers temporary positions that generally open in June, and can run right up until the end of the year. The government positions certainly pay more than the minimum wage (up to around $15 per hour) and also look good on a resume.

Pet Sitters

If you enjoy spending time with animals, then a pet sitting role (where you look after the family’s furry members, such as dogs and cats) would be ideal. Pet sitters tend to earn the same sort of money as babysitters, and are particularly needed during the summer months when owners like to get away for a holiday.
