Many jobs require a lot of social interaction. You’re working with colleagues, conversing with clients and customers all day and are generally around people. While this is great for some people, there are others who prefer working alone, like some of those who want a career in software engineering. If this sounds like you, here are three very different job roles where you can work independently.

Long Distance Truck Driver

If traveling far and wide and being on the road sounds appealing, how about a career as a long distance truck driver? You’ll need a friendly demeanor as you’ll be speaking with clients and building connections during unloading, but for the majority of the time you’ll be out on your own. If you’re the kind of person that loves having time to yourself and prefers working alone the this is ideal. To become a long distance truck driver you’ll first need a regular driving license. From there you can apply to take your commercial truck drivers test and obtain the license needed to drive heavy vehicles. Previous experience of driving for long distances can be helpful too, and can help you to be mentally prepared for a role like this.

Community Care Nurse

Community nurses work out in the community, driving from place to place. They work alone, although they, of course, have the support of GPs, hospitals, social services, and other healthcare staff. Community care nurses help patients to cope with their health issues and disabilities, which contributes to them having the best possible quality of life. Nursing is varied, challenging, gives you tons of skills, and best of all is highly rewarding. You can go home each day knowing you genuinely helped people and made a difference in their lives. To become a community care nurse you will need to get a relevant nursing degree- this could be in adult, child, mental health or midwifery and become licensed. Community care nurses need to have some good experience under their belt, so you will need to work in a hospital or clinic setting, to begin with. But this is an excellent career to aim for, the job side of things you’re working alone but you’re still interacting with patients so get the best of both worlds.

Freelancer

As a freelancer, you’re typically on your own for most of the time. Unlike with many other types of jobs, there’s no social gatherings, colleague meetings or anything like that. You are responsible for sourcing your own work and getting through it on your own initiative which can take a lot of motivation so isn’t for the work shy. However, the benefits of being a freelancer means you can set your schedule however you want (providing you meet client deadlines) and are essentially your own boss. It also means you can put a skill that you’re good and enjoy to it’s best use and make money from it. Plus you can do your job from anywhere in the world since most freelancers just need their laptop to carry out their work. Whether you’re a writer, artist, graphic designer or anything else– freelancing can be an excellent job choice for those who love working alone.
