If you ask your parents what it was like at work when they were your age, I’m sure that they will tell you the same thing – you were expected to get a job and stick at it for life. That’s right; even when the going got tough or if you didn’t particularly enjoy the work that much, jobs were for life back then. That’s because the general consensus was that having a long-term job on your resume looked a lot better than a lot of short periods spent with different companies. It was often believed that the latter showed that the individual didn’t have any commitment and couldn’t stick at anything for the long term. Thankfully, this belief isn’t held so much these days, and it is much more common for people to switch companies or change their careers completely when they realize that they aren’t suited to their current position.
Do you think that the time has finally come for you to quit your current job and try pastures new? It can be difficult to tell when the right time to quit is, but if you have noticed a couple of the following signs, then it could be worth leaving sooner rather than later.
You Could Earn More Elsewhere
How is your salary at the minute? If you think that you are being underpaid for the work that you carry out, it could be time to look at what other companies are offering for similar positions. You might earn more by joining one of them. In fact, you might even earn more by becoming freelance and working from home. You might be surprised by how much you can make working from home these days. Not only that, though, but you would benefit from being your own boss and setting your own work schedule.
You’re Not Passionate About The Company Anymore
There are various reasons why we choose to apply to certain companies. Most of the time it’s because we share the same values as them and they are passionate about certain social causes and charitable work. Unfortunately, though, companies can sometimes change their values and might start to forget about the charitable causes that once drove them to do good. As a result, your values may no longer align with the company, and you could end up losing all your passion in working for them. If this is the case, it’s worth seeking out another company who is more dedicated to their charitable and social values.
The Boss Is Terrible
We’ve all worked with terrible bosses before, but more often than not, many business owners are willing to change their ways after someone raises an issue with their managerial style. For instance, a boss who is a micromanager will usually try to fall out of this habit once they realize how much it annoys and frustrates their employees. However, there are some bosses who find it very difficult to change their ways no matter how hard they try. In some rare cases, your boss may not even want to change their managerial style. If you find that they are very difficult to work with and there is no sign of them ever changing, then it could be time to quit your job. Find a boss that you want to work hard for, rather than putting up with a sub-par one.
You’re Worried About The Company’s Future
How is the company doing as a whole? If it is a bit shaky at the minute and its future looks uncertain, then it could be time to jump ship before it’s too late. It’s much better to get out while the business is still going rather than waiting until it tanks. Sure, you will be made redundant when the business does go under, but you might find that it’s harder to find a job under pressure. If you don’t have a long notice period, then you might not find a job before your company closes down and that could lead to a long period out of work while you are job hunting. That could put pressure on your financial situation. At least if you start job hunting now well in advance, then you can enjoy a seamless transition between companies and won’t feel any pressure from your finances.
The Employees Are Always Ignored
Every business owner should always listen to their employees whenever they have any feedback or want to voice their opinions. Taking on criticism and feedback from employees is a great opportunity for entrepreneurs to improve various aspects of the company so that employees are a lot more comfortable and productive in the workplace. However, some bosses aren’t as open to their employees’ ideas. If this is the case with your boss, then it might be best to move to a company who take their workers a lot more seriously.
Your Skills Aren’t Being Put To Use Properly
You will no doubt be highly skilled and have all the necessary experience to be in your current position. But are your skills and experience being put to proper use? If you feel like you aren’t being used in your role and are just carrying out menial tasks, then you should consider moving to a much more challenging role at a new company. If your skills aren’t put to proper use then they could end up being wasted and you could end up a bit rusty in some skill areas.
Every Day Is Boring
Do you find that you end up watching the clock when you are sitting at your desk? This is a very clear sign that your work is boring you, something which it should never do. This could be largely down to the fact that you aren’t being used properly within the company. So, it could be time to update your resume and start looking for a job in a new company that will ensure your skills are always put to their proper use.
So, is it time for you to quit your job?
