Some people get a real kick out of a team environment. They love the way the team can motivate them, and the social element of working with other people. However, it’s not for everyone- and if you’re naturally introverted or just prefer the focus you can get when working alone then being part of a busy team won’t be for you. This isn’t a bad thing at all, it just means that you need to find the right type of job to suit you. Instead of putting ‘great team player’ and ‘enjoys working with others’ on your CV when it simply isn’t true, have a think about a role that would fit you instead.Make sure you tailor your CV to the job description rather than sending out a generic one. Here are just a few examples.

Trade jobs

If you enjoy physical work and using your hands, getting a trade behind you could be a great way to go. These jobs tend to be very secure, since people always need bricklayers, plasterers, electricians, decorators and more. Chances are you’ll have to start as an apprentice or shadow/ labour for an experienced tradesperson, it can mean a lot of work as well as college study without much pay in the beginning. But later on you can earn fantastic money from your trade. While you’ll often be working on building sites with other tradespeople, for the most part your day to day tasks will involve working by yourself which is ideal if that’s what you like to do.

Long distance truck driver

Long distance driving can be a great, relaxing job or a lonely nightmare depending on your personality. If you like being by yourself then driving like this allows you to hit the open road, listen to your music or podcasts and get on with your job without having to make small talk with anyone else. While you’re at the mercy of traffic, you’re not being micromanaged or have a boss breathing down your neck- you’re given your tasks and can go about and get on with things with no hassle.

Home business owner

If you’re a bit of a homebody and also love being at home then starting your own business could be the perfect option. You will have to liaise with customers and clients,  but as it will all be done over things like email and live chat it’s much easier than face to face. You don’t even need to hire employees, if you outsource the work to freelancers and third party companies then it’s all tackled for you. Whether you need someone who can install the top javascript frameworks or someone that can design your website, it’s easy to find professional freelancers and companies online.

We live in a society where extrovertism is praised, but there’s nothing wrong with being an introvert. There’s nothing wrong with wanting or preferring to work alone, so if this sounds like you then find the right job role. Chances are you’ll be so much happier.
