Yet again, I have another great research article and blog from Spherion’s Emerging Workforce Study findings.  Today’s blog post will be talking about how the technology surrounding the job search & recruiting is changing the HR landscape.

About the 2015 Emerging Workforce Study

The Emerging Workforce Study by Spherion has examined the issues and trends impacting employment and the workplace for more than 18 years. The 2015 study examines several forward-looking trends and indicators for what the future workplace will become. As the perspectives, attitudes and expectations of the workforce continues to evolve, employers need to better understand workers for greater success.

What else should you know?

  • More than 2,000 workers and 225 human resource managers were surveyed on their opinions and attitudes around critical workplace topics such as recruitment, employee engagement, job satisfaction, retention, employee advocacy, social media use, generational differences and work/life balance. Findings from this in-depth research reveal new trends, insights and impacts that are important for U.S. employers and their employees.
  • The study was conducted by Harris Poll, a Nielson company, between March and April 2015.
  • The survey offers great statistics and trend information for HR managers and businesses and points to an interesting, growing gap between employers’ and employees’ views.
  • The survey also includes data that can impact HR strategies to increase engagement, productivity and retention, among other topics important to the employment life cycle and workplace.

The Job Seeker & Recruiter Tool Kit is Massive

With the advent of new technology and so many new recruiting tools, employers are challenged to create the right formula for accessing the most qualified job seekers. LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, blogs and mobile apps are changing how candidates desire to connect with employers and the strategies recruiters and HR managers use to reach them. What are the most effective tools for attracting the best employees and what does it mean for the future of HR?

The findings:

  • Workers are using a variety of tools to find job openings, including their work devices.hem.
    • 79% use a personal computer or laptop
    • 27% use a smartphone
    • 23% use a work computer or laptop
    • 22% use a tablet
  • Websites are also a popular tool for job-seekers looking for employment opportunities, with 30% searching on sites like Glassdoor and CareerBuilder.workers (39% in 2015 versus 17% in 2014).
  • Only 14% reported looking for jobs on social media websites like LinkedIn and Facebook.

My Thoughts

One of the biggest frustrations I hear from job seekers is that they aren’t sure where the heck to start their job search?  Do they focus on Linkedin only?  Should they be researching all of the major job boards?  What about personal branding tools and blogs?  There just seems to be a new “perfect” website for the job search almost everyday.

The same can be said for recruiters.  The options are endless here.  There are great tools like Video Interviewing technology and new job boards for recruiters to utilize.  The technology doesn’t stop and recruiting teams must focus on which new tech will allow their process to succeed.
